How do I know if my tree is healthy?
A healthy tree has a full canopy for the season, flexible twigs, and bark that is not peeling in large plates or showing deep cracks with decay. Leaves (or needles) should be the normal color for that species. If half the crown is dead, the trunk sounds hollow, or mushrooms are growing at the base, call for an on-site look.
What are common signs of a sick or dying tree?
Watch for sudden leaf drop, sparse foliage, dead limbs in the crown, cracks in the trunk, leaning that is getting worse, carpenter ants, or fungus at the root flare. Storm-split crotches and roots lifting out of the soil are also warning signs. We inspect from the ground and tell you whether trimming, deadwood removal, or full removal is the safer option.
Can a tree with dead branches still be saved?
Often yes. Deadwood in an otherwise strong tree can be removed so the living canopy stays. If decay has moved into the trunk, the tree is leaning toward a house, or more than about half the crown is dead, removal is usually safer than trying to save it.
Do trees need fertilizer or watering in the Lehigh Valley?
New plantings and trees under drought stress benefit from deep watering during dry stretches. Mature, established trees on lawns usually do not need fertilizer unless a soil issue shows up. Over-fertilizing can push weak growth. We focus on structure, clearance, and removing hazards rather than chemical programs.
When is the best time of year to prune for tree health?
Most Lehigh Valley shade trees can be pruned year-round for safety. Structural pruning is often done in late winter while the tree is dormant and pests are less active. Oaks are better pruned in the dormant season to reduce oak wilt risk. Storm-damaged or hanging limbs should be taken down as soon as it is safe, any month.
Are oak, maple, and ash trees in Northampton at higher risk?
Ash trees in Pennsylvania have been hit hard by emerald ash borer; many declining ash trees become brittle and need removal. Oaks can suffer oak wilt and storm breakage at weak crotches. Maples often drop deadwood and can heave sidewalks with surface roots. We assess species, structure, and targets (house, wires, play areas) on site.
Trimming and deadwood
How often should trees be trimmed?
Most shade trees do well with a professional trim every 3–5 years. Trim sooner if limbs reach a roof, walkway, or service line, or after a storm. Young trees benefit from earlier structural pruning so they grow with a stronger form.
What is the difference between trimming and topping?
Trimming (pruning) removes selected branches with proper cuts so the tree can close over the wound. Topping chops the main leaders and leaves stubs. Topping stresses the tree, invites decay, and grows weak sprouts that break in the next storm. We do not top trees.
Will you prune near my roof and power lines?
Yes. We trim for clearance from roofs, siding, driveways, and utilities using proper rigging. For high-voltage lines owned by the utility, some work must be done by the power company; we will tell you if that applies.
What is deadwood removal?
Deadwood is dead limbs still attached to a living tree. They can fall without warning. We remove those limbs and leave healthy growth when the tree is structurally sound. See our deadwood service page for examples.
Removal, stumps, and storms
When should a tree be removed instead of trimmed?
Removal is the right call when a tree is dead, badly leaning toward a structure, split, heavily decayed, or crowding utilities in a way that pruning cannot fix. We explain the reason on site before any work starts.
Do you grind the stump after removal?
Yes. Stump grinding can be done with the removal or later. We grind below grade so you can seed, landscape, or plant again. Chips can be hauled or left as mulch if you want them.
What should I do if a tree falls on my house?
Get people out of harm’s way, stay clear of downed power lines, and call 717-448-5495. We provide 24/7 storm response in Northampton and the Lehigh Valley. If lines are involved, also call the utility and 911 as needed. We remove the tree and debris when it is safe.

Price depends on tree size, location, access, and whether we grind the stump. A backyard tree with clear access costs less than a large tree over a roof. We quote after seeing the job — estimates are free, with no surprise extras for standard cleanup.
